Shut the water off, protect the floor, then call. Here is the order that limits the damage while a licensed plumber is on the way.
If water is running where it should not be in your Leander home, shut off the water first and call a plumber second. Water heaters in Leander fail younger than the national averages suggest, and the water is the reason. The City of Leander’s 2024 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report measured hardness at 194 parts per million of calcium and magnesium, drawn from Lake Travis. The U.S. Geological Survey classes anything over 180 milligrams per liter as very hard, and it says plainly that when hard water is heated in a home water heater, calcium carbonate scale forms and that scale can reduce the life of the equipment.
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety recommends replacing a water heater every 7 to 10 years depending on water quality and usage. A slab leak is a supply line failure under the concrete foundation.
