Bertram sits on State Highway 29 about halfway between Liberty Hill and Burnet — nine miles from our shop, which makes it one of the shortest drives on our schedule. When a Bertram homeowner calls about a water heater that quit or a slab that’s gone warm underfoot, the truck that shows up is the same one that serves Liberty Hill, not a dispatch from an Austin call center.
The town has been a railroad town since 1882, when the community of San Gabriel picked up and moved to meet the Austin & Northwestern line and took the name of Austin merchant Rudolph Bertram. That depot is still the destination for the Austin Steam Train Association’s Hill Country Flyer out of Cedar Park, and the Oatmeal Festival still fills downtown every Labor Day weekend. What’s changed is the growth: Bertram counted 1,616 residents in the 2020 census and roughly 2,000 by the 2024 estimate, with new subdivisions going in along Highway 29 and out toward Oatmeal.

Trinity groundwater is famously hard — a calcium-bicarbonate water that leaves white scale on every fixture it touches. Inside a tank water heater that scale settles as sediment, insulates the burner from the water, and shortens the tank’s life by years. Inside a tankless unit it narrows the heat exchanger until the unit starts throwing error codes.

In and around the historic downtown, Bertram still has houses that date to its cotton-shipping years. Those homes have often been added onto more than once, and it’s common to find galvanized steel supply lines, cast-iron drains, and a water heater in a closet nobody has opened in a decade. Low pressure at the far end of the house, rusty water first thing in the morning, and slow drains that never quite clear are the usual signs.
